Steel Bike Frames

To an elite cyclist, the material used to construct a bike frame is no small matter. Within groups of serious cyclists, there exists a subtle division between those who prefer steel and those who prefer aluminum. Those who prefer aluminum assert that steel is overly heavy and spongy. However, to a lover of steel bike frames, it is this very sponginess that makes them so beautiful.

The natural springiness of steel means that the metal tubes used to construct the bike frames can be smaller in diameter than the somewhat stiffer aluminum or titanium frames. The springy feel of steel allows the bike to move and flex with the rider, especially on sprints when every advantage counts.

Newer designs offer air-hardened steel, in which the steel has undergone a process to increase its strength during the cooling stage after molding. In the past, to get the strongest steel frames it was necessary to purchase specialized alloys, making a hardened steel frame prohibitively costly for many cyclists. However, the advent of air-hardened steel makes harder steel frames an affordable option for many cycling enthusiasts.

However, the relative softness of the material makes it an unsuitable choice for larger, heavier riders. The size of tubes that would be required for the frame to support a heavier rider would make the bike too heavy to be practical for regular use. However, for smaller riders who prefer a lean, narrow design for the frame, steel will allow the smallest diameter tubes of any metal frames.

On the downside, steel frames contain iron and are prone to rust if the paint is damaged. Any scratches must be promptly repaired before atmospheric moisture and oxygen have a chance to react with the bare steel. This also makes paint a necessity, whereas aluminum and titanium frames have the option of a bare metal look.

Steel frames are easily and affordably repaired if damaged, and are available in a wide range of prices. Lower end frames are available at a cost that is affordable to even the casual cyclist, yet there is still a vast range of professional-grade frames. Big or small, inexpensive or costly, steel bike frames offer an option for every rider.
